Yesterday, the circus came to
Espéraza. Under the bright red "big top", everything became red.
Here, a pony shows his skill on the teeter totter. In the
background, the trapeze artist is still dressed as a Cheyenne Indian
from her other appearance, as a rope twirler. In France, Cheyenne is
pronounced the same as chien (dog) and people sometimes named their
dogs "Cheyenne" as a joke. I'm not sure if this had any relevance in
the Indian act.
The whole circus consisted of one
man, two women performers, two women workers and two young boys,
one a performer the other not quite old enough to do anything other
than help carry props around. They were a small but jovial group and we
enjoyed the 2-hour performance immensely!
